Ep.64: Faith Crisis 101 & Tools to Help You Navigate One – Dan Ellsworth

Previous Still Rowing guest, Dan Ellsworth, (see Ep.9: Emerging From a Faith Crisis With Greater Faith) returns in this episode to share more about what a faith crisis is and is not, healthy vs. unhealthy ways of approaching faith crisis and available tools to help navigate doubts to put us back on a trajectory of faith in Christ and His church.

Ep.63: Faith, Doubt, and Finding Answers to Hard Questions w/ Lorin “Moss” Lillywhite

In today’s technological age where a sea of information is available at our fingertips and differing opinions constantly echo in our ears, it can be challenging to get to the bottom of the truth of any subject – especially faith and religion. When hard questions arise that may challenge our testimony, how do we find answers that will satisfy both the mind and the heart?

In this episode, Lorin “Moss” Lillywhite shares his unique experience deep diving into faith-affirming and anti-Mormon literature – initially with the intent to disprove the truthfulness of the gospel – and now as a means of deepening his conversion and helping others. Moss shares valuable insights how we too can find answers to hard questions and details the importance of allowing both the intellect and Spirit to play a key role in our conversion. He also shares some personal trials of faith that have deepened his testimony of the structure of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and our responsibility and opportunity to bear one another’s burdens as disciples of Christ.

Ep.62: {Anchors of Faith} The Family Proclamation: An Inclusive, Timely & Prophetic Document – Jenet Erickson

In 1995, President Gordon B. Hinckley shared  “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” in the women’s session of General Conference. At the time, the truths stated within the proclamation may have only seemed like a reiteration of basic truths agreed upon by many in and outside of the church. But since 1995, we have seen a major turnabout in public opinion regarding the definition and purpose of marriage, sexuality and gender, and the value of childbearing. Today we see the proclamation increasingly coming under fire with some saying it is too exclusive, constraining, and outmoded.

In this episode, BYU professor and family studies researcher Jenet Erickson discusses the data regarding the effect of marriage on child/adult development and well-being, the unique contributions of fathers and mothers on child development as well as how these findings shed light on the timely and prophetic nature of the Family Proclamation. She also discusses how we all fall outside the lines of the familial ideal, but through Christ and as a beloved member of God’s great family, we can feel love and belonging despite our mortal challenges.

Ep.61: {Anchors of Faith} Evidence of the Authenticity of the Book of Mormon – Tad Callister

In the introduction of the Book of Mormon, we read the following statement from Joseph Smith: “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on the earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” Since then, many leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have declared that the truthfulness of the gospel and the restored church rise or fall on the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and its origins. Understanding this, many critics of the church are intent on disproving its authenticity.

In this episode, Tad Callister – retired attorney, prolific author, and former General Sunday School President of the church – makes a case for the Book of Mormon by sharing historical, doctrinal, and spiritual evidences of this inspired book and how a careful study and application of its teachings will provide a sure foundation for our testimonies of Christ in these last days.

SRS: Called to Love, Share & Invite – Tara McCausland

The threefold mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is to proclaim the gospel, perfect the Saints, and redeem the dead. The first part of that mission – proclaim the gospel – came through loud and clear in the April 2022 conference with five talks given on the subject of missionary work. But as members of the church, we may feel reluctant or overwhelmed by the commission to share this news, good as it may be.

In this Still Rowing Short, host Tara McCausland shares some why’s and how’s of missionary work and some faith-promoting experiences she had as a full-time missionary in England with the intent to inspire a greater desire in each us to fulfill this important call to love, share, and invite others to partake of the blessings of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ

Summary: As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, how do you feel about the symbol of the cross? In this episode, professor and scholar John Hilton III confronts how–though two different things–church members’ apprehension toward the symbol of the cross might lead some to downplay the doctrinal significance of Christ’s Crucifixion as a part of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. John discusses how during a divisive and discouraging time, the symbol of the cross can unify and uplift us. Additionally, he illustrates the importance of specifically studying Christ’s Crucifixion and how doing so can give us greater appreciation for and ability to draw upon the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
